Yup. My goal is to live to 100. Okay. Maybe 100 and one day. After all, I need a little time to enjoy it. If I only make it to 80, I won't feel short changed though. But I'm shooting for the full hundred. My goal probably isn't all that far out there. After all, I'm almost half way there. Today, 1 in 50 lives to be 100. The number is growing by 8% per year in industrialized nations. I live in the U.S., a seriously industrialized nation. One point for me. Women live longer than men. One point against me. On the other hand, men that made it to 100 were in far better shape than women. Another point for me. Four out of five of us men were in extremely good mental and physical health. Not so for women. Centenarians in general come from all walks of life. No education to post graduate. Very poor to very rich. All religions and all ethnicities. Vegetarians to high fat meat eaters. Few, however, are obese. And any substantial history of smoking is rare. More points for me. Preliminary studies indicate that centenarians are better able to handle stress than ordinary people. I'll take a half point here. Just as impressive as their ages is centenarians' attitudes. They are fighters. They take extraordinary measures to maintain their physical strength and thinking ability. They refuse to see age as a limitation on their enjoyment of life. More points for me! 100? Yes! I'll see you there!
