Star Our History

The surname Younker is the 11,758th most common one in the United States. It is apparently occupational in origin. It has been associated with the Dutch meaning "the young nobleman or squire". There are several Younker blood lines, but we trace ours back to:

Joseph Younker married Magline Hights in the early 1800's. Magline was born in Germany.

Their son, Michael Younker, was born Sept 28, 1831 and died Sept 16, 1902 in Monitor, IN. He married Anna Catherine Ziegler. Anna was born Jan 11, 1832 in Germany and passed away March 22, 1910 in Lafayette, IN. They had eight children!

Their youngest, Joseph Conrad Younker was born Aug 22, 1869 in Chalmers, IN and died Aug 16, 1956 in West Point, IN. He married Lavina Myrtle Chichester on July 8, 1891. Lavina was born Nov 9, 1872 and died Jan 7, 1960. They had two children: George and Laura.

George Bernard Younker was the younger of the two, born Feb 27, 1904 in West Point, IN. He is my grandfather. He passed away on June 5, 1979 in San Diego, CA. He married my grandmother, Alta Berniece Andrews on Aug 28, 1923 in Tippecanoe, IN. Berniece, as her friends called her, was born May 31, 1906 in West Point, IN and also passed away in San Diego, on April 1, 1984 . Pappy, as we called him, made me drink a whole glass of beer (probably eight oz.) back when I was about ten years old or so, after I nagged him to let me take a drink of his. He said, "If you're going to drink beer, you're going to drink your own! And you have to drink the WHOLE thing!" No problem I thought. But when you're only ten or so, beer is pretty bitter and it's pretty hard to drink that much! A sip or two is usually plenty! That was the LAST time I ever asked to sip HIS beer! Grandmother meantime, made the world's best mashed potatos! Ask anyone that's had them! She would spend HOURS mashing real potatos into a smooth, creamy texture. But her real secret was whatever she added to them! But for us kids, it wasn't the mashed potatos. It was her infamous home made chocolate chip cookies! I'm TELLIN' ya! The only reason she was summoned to heaven was to make those cookies for the angels! Mmmm mmmm good!

Pappy and Grandmother had four kids, "Bud", Jean, Robert, and Sherry. Bud passed away many years ago. Jean and her husband Van (my uncle) provided me with the BEST Thanksgiving Day (and dinner) memories ever! It was tradition when I was a kid to go to their place for all the fixin's. Van was a former cook in the Sea Bees and REALLY knew his way around a kitchen! Van passed away on July 21, 1996. His famous "meow" and "What you girls doing? (asking me and my brother), along with "Got any girlfriends?" (this when I was about ten years old!) will always be with me! Jean passed away December 5, 1999. I miss them tons. Can't wait to hook back up with them on the other side!

My aunt Sherry has provided many memories as a kid too. I remember when she graduated for example, and something to do with when my Uncle Mac was in the Navy. I remember us spending a whole afternoon waiting to see him on TV. Don't remember the details, but it was a big tadoo when we finally saw him! Apparently it was when he came in on the ship. I rode my first horse at her place in Santee, CA too! And when I was still a young whipper snapper, I changed her daughter (my cousin) Lee Ann's diapers on a regular basis. The grownups got a big kick out of that! Theresa is her oldest daughter and we used to pal around when we were little.

By now, you've figured out which of Pappy and Grandmother's kids are my dad: Robert, AKA Tex. He got that name when he was young in San Diego because he was born in Texas! He's now known as Bob (except to his childhood friends!). He's a little nervous about the Internet privacy thing, so I'm not going to give much more detail. He married my mom, Sandra Jeannine Morton, back in 1956.

The two of them had four of us kids: myself, David, Vicki, and Daniel.

Of the four of us, only one has had any kids to carry on the name (at least on this branch of the tree): me! Shaun and Shelley are my two kids. In a few more years, they should be having some of their own...

On my mom's side, my grandparents were Marcellus and Marcella Kleve. Granddaddy (Marcellus) lived July 8, 1912 to September 13, 1968. His father was Joseph Anothy Kleve and mother Theresa Lachnit. Marcellus' father was Wilhelm Kleve born Feb 10, 1838 in Angermunde, Prussia, Germany. He died July 20, 1945 in Columbus, Nebraska. His mother was Genevie Widmer, born 4 DEC 1837 in Konstanz, Germany. Joseph's father was Wilhelm Kleve, born February 10, 1838 in Angermunde, Prussia, Germany. He passed away March 12, 1888 in Humphrey, Nebraska. Granny's maiden name was Morton.

And that's our family tree. Here in the new millenium, the Younker's are infesting all of Southern California, putting down roots from Santa Barbara to San Diego Counties!
